There are conflicting reports as to what happened today in Belfast after 2.30 pm. Loyalists accuse PSNI of diverting their protest route in the last moment so that they should pass via an infamous interface area, Short Strand where, as they say, they were attacked by the Republicans.
PSNIin the very early hours of Saturday morning prepared huge screens to separate Protestants and Catholics in Short Strand, so it was not a last minute change.
Republicans claim they were attacked at homes in Short Strand when the Loyalist protesters were marching.
One is definately clear, though- East Belfast looks like a war zone. Twenty nine injured PSNI officers. The riots followed a protest held in front of Belfast City Hall in the midday.
